Onkyo Remote 3 App Reviews

Nifty App

Could use some improvements (mostly speed and a few bugs), but offers great functionality. Increased compatibility / functionality with the iPad Pro would be great. Would be nice to have Apple Music side by side with this Remote app. The ability to control multiple devices volume all at once would be nice too. A sort of master volume for all devices on the network, or at least one screen to control each one all together.

Good app 2 recommendations

App works well and I use it daily to control my TX-NR535. Sometimes it wont connect to amp and I need to "force close" the app (double tap home and swipe up to dismiss it). Then relaunch and it connects. #1 request is that the volume be controlled with the iPhone volume. Other apps like Spotify remote play can do this so it should be easy to add. #2 request is that app stay connected for a minute or two when switching to another app. Again, thats an option for iOS apps and it wont kill the battery to stay connected for a few seconds. As it is now the app has to reconnect every time you switch back to it. It lets you rename inputs but the rename doesnt carry over to the amp itself. The rename only shows in the app. Thats a feature of the amp not the app but still Id like to customize the input names.

Connect failure always

I install this app on my iPad pro running iOS 9.2. It is able to discover my tx-525, but never connect successfully. Please check if there is compatibility problems.

Love it. Could be better but its very handy

Love the app very much. I can connect from anywhere in the house and have music going. Most of the functionality works very well. An area of improvement would be the constant connecting of the app to the receiver. That would make it a 5 star experience

Inconsistent performance

Same as others, refuses to connect consistently

“Searching for a device"

When working, the app earns 4 stars. You can control multiple zones, stream from your device, switch inputs, change volume/bass/treble. It’s terrific. When it stops working— for unknown reasons— it displays only the above statement. It sometimes help if you unplug the receiver to restart it. Please, Onkyo, stabilize this app...

Crashes

Even after wiring receiver via Ethernet to my modem, the receiver just crashes out every hour. Awful app. Wouldve bought Sony, but wanted a phono channel, plus streaming. Will just buy phono pre-amp, next time

Workaround ...Searching for device... for connectivity ...Searching for device... issue

Like others, Ive seen the endless Searching for device messages when opening the app or returning, even after leaving briefly. While this is inexcusable for a professionally developed app, there is a workaround to make it find the receiver more quickly. Turn on airplane mode and re-enable Wi-Fi and it will instantly find the receiver. Is it searching the internet for your receiver and this limits the search to your local network? Who knows. I feel dirty even typing this, but it works. And think of the mobile charges youll save. Onkyo, fix your app. Have it limit device enumeration to the local network and cache the connection while multitasking.

Love it

I have the app on my IPhone, IPad and wifes iPhone, very easy to use with Pandora Radio and control all functions. One less remote in the leaving room now. Easy set up and comprehensive controls.

Very easy

Great app, very easy to use one less remote on the couch works very well with Pandora radio very easy to set up and great functionality

Works 25% of the time since iOS update

Used to love this app. Downloaded newest update (9.2?) and Boom! Barely works. Takes 5 minutes to find my device--on the rare chance it does. Please fix the app!

Not working - worst App

Its not recognizing the receiver.. It says searching and forever its searching...

a mess

update: like all others it stopped working one day for no reason on the exact same network as it had worked for two months. Upgraded the firmware. Reset. Reboot. Reinstalled app. Did the airplane mode trick. Nothing. It was so nice when it worked

Does not find receiver

Does not find receiver. Had no issues before iOS 9. Please make app comparable with the latest version of iOS.

Worked great...then... device not found

Worked great for 6 months then one day had an error connecting and has not been able to connect since. Uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted, tried wifi, all to no avail. TX-NR838 is right there...working fine but still the Remote App will not connect. I found if I remove the power cord from the receiver for 10 seconds that I can get the app to reconnect but that only lasts for a short while until the app crashes and will not reconnect. The app is a great feature that just doesnt work consistently. Please fix the disconnect issue! Very unreliable. Constant disconnects.

Great app! Works as advertised.

Im using version 3 of the app on iPhone 4s with iOS 7.1 with a TX-NR616. The Onkyo is hard wired to wifi router. The app takes just a few seconds to "find" the unit. Then I can do anything with the app that is possible with the physical remote. Its fast, easy, and intuitive. Way easier than the IR remote. Leave the unit in Network Standby to always have access to the units controls. I especially like that I can be outside and turn it on and access Zone 2 controls to play Pandora or any other streaming media through the outside Zone 2 speakers.

Does not connect

This app needs to be fixed/updated!!!! The app is great when it connects. I can unplug the receiver and it will work very temporarily. Please fix this issue!!!

It doesnt work

Ive had my Onkyo receiver and app for around a year now. My app doesnt even recognize or pick up the receiver, and hasnt since the first month I owned it. This is a terrible app and if youre using this as a basis for controlling your receiver, as I did, Id suggest looking elsewhere. At this point, I will probably double down and throw some money at something that will actually work. This app is a waste of time.

Excellent

Using with a 646. No connection issues at all. Great to access the many net music sources without the TV.

Good when works

Constantly loses connection. Also, if you are in the app and switch to messages then back to the app you have to wait for it to connect. I know waiting a few seconds isnt really "that bad" but they have been times where I needed to make volume adjustments to zone 1 or 2 quickly and the app doesnt allow so. Other than that good app.
